On December 13th, the Council of Europe organized a training session on the theme “Business and Human Rights” in Strasbourg. The CARO Centre was represented by Marie-Camille Pitton, Secretary General.
The primary mission of the Council of Europe is to “promote democracy, human rights, and the rule of law throughout Europe and beyond”. Established in 1949, the Council of Europe is the continent's leading human rights organization. It has established a “common legal space in its 46 member states, based on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)”.
This training day provided an opportunity to address essential topics such as:
- the implications of the HELP program for lawyers
- the case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on business and human rights
- the role of businesses in protecting the environment and social rights.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit the European Court of Human Rights and discuss the current challenges of corporate due diligence.
