“"The role of Alternative Dispute Resolution in economic integration, Sustainable Development Goals, and Climate Justice in the Caribbean region”.

On September 21, the CARO Centre, in collaboration with the Caribbean branch of CIArb and the Jamaica-based Dispute Resolution Foundation (DRF), organized a conference on “The role of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in economic integration, the Sustainable Development Goals and climate justice in the Caribbean region”.

The event was held in a hybrid format in Kingston (Jamaica) and online.

The event brought together professionals from the Caribbean region and Singapore to discuss the future of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as a tool for sustainable development.

The conference was held to mark the International Day of Peace, and led to the signing of the Kingston Agreement on ADR and sustainable development.

The event was divided into three parts: speeches, messages and presentations, a round-table discussion and the signing of the Kingston Agreement.

The speakers for the first part were :

  • Justice Dr. Anthony Gafoor; President of the Caribbean branch of the President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb);
  • Sir Dennis Byron, former President of the Caribbean Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda;
  • Dr. Peter Maynard, KC, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association;
  • Mr. Georges Lim, Chairman of the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC);
  • Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies;
  • Mr. John S. Bassie, President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb).

A round table discussion on the theme “How can ADR support the region's sustainable development objectives?” brought together the following speakers:

  • Dr. Marie-Camille Pitton, secretary-general of the CARO Centre;
  • Solène Balaguette, legal expert at the CARO Centre;
  • Alana Lancaster, Professor, Faculty of Law, The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados;
  • Cesar Pereira, Ciarb FCIArb, Partner at Justen, Pereira, Oliviera & Talamini, Founding President of Ciarb Brazil, São Paulo;
  • Bryan Bannon, Regional Relations Manager for the Americas, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb);
  • The conference provided an opportunity to discuss the specific needs of the Caribbean states in terms of climate resilience. It also highlighted the importance of services such as mediation, which can be put to good use in achieving the 17 sustainable development goals proposed by the UN. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
